The Wikinfo Owl
Owl of Wisdom
(or is it the owl of humor?)

Where's our Owl?

Where is our Wikinfo Owl in the upper left hand corner? I miss it. Is it going to be added?

Next, go to google and type in "Wikinfo" and one gets the English Main page.

And when gets to the Main page, one is directed here:

Which is not this Main Page:

We have a lot of problems.WHEELER (talk) 20:09, 13 August 2012 (EDT)

I'll see about the owl. Fred Bauder (talk) 20:35, 13 August 2012 (EDT)
After seeing the owl there, I feel at home now. Thanks.WHEELER (talk) 09:28, 14 August 2012 (EDT)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────Again, working on the owl; its uploaded but seems to be in the wrong directory. Fred Bauder (talk) 15:09, 29 August 2013 (EDT)

What do we do about Wikidata? They're removing all interwiki links and relying on this instead, but I think it only works for them. How do we shoehorn ourselves in, and if we can't, do we manually reinsert the interwiki links they're removing? That'll work in the short time, but they'll get outdated fast. --Anime Addict (talk) 08:20, 14 March 2013 (EDT)

Go to wikidata and try to figure out how it works, I guess. That project is intended to deal with all the detailed outdating that routinely occurs. Fred Bauder (talk) 09:00, 14 March 2013 (EDT)

Back up

It doesn't seem Wikia is going to work out, so I've bit the bullet and leased a VPN. It costs about $100 a month, so chip in if you can. I think we'll take advertizing, but use criteria for acceptance, see to review and refine criteria. I seem to have lost the images from the main Wikinfo, and now they are probably useless anyway, although I am trying to get them from Wikia. The sql file for the other Wikinfos will be uploaded after the runJobs here runs. Fred Bauder (talk) 14:56, 29 August 2013 (EDT)

Starting work on the language wikinfos

Uploading images now, English is 1.6 G; my upload speed is rather slow, after 13 hours it is half done; did Deutsch, others are rather small. There is a 4G or so gzipped sql file to upload also. Fred Bauder (talk) 08:00, 31 August 2013 (EDT)

Some of the thumbnails result from the missing upload directory from multilingual which I seem to have deleted. Most of those will repopulate from commons if deleted. There is a separate problem which seem to derive from the unknown path to ImageMagic convert. ImageMagic is present somewhere, the software detects it but something goes wrong. Studying this.

In the article Udana the instruction hasn't worked, so the rest of the page is centred. Peter jackson (talk) 04:36, 6 September 2013 (EDT)

Reimported this to get rid of the distorted text, Template:PaliCanon needs work too. The problem is in this segment, <center><table width=60% cellspacing=0 cellpadding=10 style="text-align:left; margin:0px 5px 0px 5px; font-size:100%"><tr><td> Then, on realizing the significance of that, the Blessed One on that occasion exclaimed:<ref>Thanissaro's translation, e.g., in [ Thanissaro (1994)].</ref> <td> ''{{IAST|Atha kho bhagavā etam-atthaṃ viditvā tāyaṃ velāyaṃ imaṃ udānaṃ udānesi:}}''<ref>SLTP (n.d.).</ref> </table></center> which I have put onto the Sandbox for diagnosis. Fred Bauder (talk) 07:45, 6 September 2013 (EDT)
Yes, I remember the problem with the PC template. I ended up going through all the articles I could think of that might have it & just deleting it. Peter jackson (talk) 04:28, 10 September 2013 (EDT)

It works here: Fred Bauder (talk) 07:52, 10 September 2013 (EDT)
My efforts to get this going here have been unsuccessful so far.
Check out "Special characters" above the edit box. Fred Bauder (talk) 14:50, 1 October 2013 (EDT)
Just tried. No actual heading for that, but there are a few there. We need lots more, like ref, blockquote ... Peter jackson (talk) 06:29, 3 October 2013 (EDT)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────In preferences go to the editing tab and check "Show edit toolbar (requires JavaScript)". Special characters and reference are there, but not, I admit, blockquotes. I'll see what I can do though about restoring the old system at the bottom. Fred Bauder (talk) 06:49, 3 October 2013 (EDT)

It's already ticked in my preferences. Maybe these computers haven't got Java?
If you don't manage to sort it out after a while I'll just move articles to English when necessary. Peter jackson (talk) 12:56, 3 October 2013 (EDT)

I am in the process of moving from Network Solutions to DreamHost. There are problems with capacity here and also a tendency to sluggishness, even complete failure to load at times. This at will stay up until everything is ready there. The address will be moved to DreamHost soon and the moved wikis will show up at that address. Editing should continue here as a final backup will be made here. Editing there, at, is for purposes of testing. Fred Bauder (talk) 07:37, 14 September 2013 (EDT)

DreamHost is not working out. This move is very unlikely to happen unless things clear up there. Fred Bauder (talk) 09:05, 16 September 2013 (EDT)
Hopeless... Although I'm sure if I had more patience it would have cleared up some. Fred Bauder (talk) 14:51, 1 October 2013 (EDT)

I've spent a few days trying to get Lua to work. Trouble is this VPS has outdated software that is very hard to update. Try to import Module:Bananas to see what we're up against. Fred Bauder (talk) 14:58, 1 October 2013 (EDT)

There is a list at Fred Bauder (talk) 15:56, 1 October 2013 (EDT)

Good news and bad news

Lua was easy to set up on the new provider and is working on this wiki. The bad news is that importing major modules adds thousands of jobs which slow the site as they are processed. Anyway, the latest templates from Wikipedia which use Lua, look for "#invoke:[name of module]..." Fred Bauder (talk) 10:00, 10 October 2013 (EDT)

In the absence of significant contributions Wikinfo will have to be supported by advertising. I'm thinking about value-based advertising, see to see what might be involved. Also, I'm thinking about profit-sharing. Ads could only go on articles that were better than the Wikipedia version. Fred Bauder (talk) 14:58, 1 October 2013 (EDT)

Language wikinfos

Language Wikinfos that have no active editors will be archived and removed on November 1, 2013. Fred Bauder (talk) 14:38, 16 October 2013 (EDT)

No need for that but I might make them read only at some point if the only activity is me removing spambot activity. Fred Bauder (talk) 05:49, 10 November 2013 (UTC)

Up and Running

Yahoooooo!!!!!! Hip, Hip, Hurray!!!! Wikinfo is up and running!!! Thanks to be God--and Fred! Thank you for this! Thank you very much! It is a pleasure to see this up and running! Good news! I wish we could all gather clink glasses and have a jolly good time to celebrate. This is a good thing to celebrate and rejoice! Amen, Hallejuh, Pass the ammunition!WHEELER (talk) 11:42, 10 November 2013 (UTC)

Worse than a puppy... Fred Bauder (talk) 11:50, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
You could try telling people. For weeks I've been regularly trying the new address and finding it down. Only now have I accidentally dicovered the old one's returned. (The screen jumped while I was trying to click on something else on my favourites list.) How about a notice on Wikia, which is an address some people will have? Peter jackson (talk) 14:49, 21 November 2013 (UTC)
Yes, a note on Wikia Wikinfo would help. Fred Bauder (talk) 02:02, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

English Wikinfo

Where is it? Links from here just redirect back here. Peter jackson (talk) 11:41, 13 December 2013 (UTC) Fred Bauder (talk) 23:22, 13 December 2013 (UTC)
And is there a new code to replace wf, which doesn't work now, or do links have to be done lonhand as above? Peter jackson (talk) 11:24, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
I'll check into that, but I don't want something that redirects a person or article to another address. I don't like what it was doing. Let's see where wf:Wikinfo:Village pump goes or enwf:Wikinfo:Village pump. Fred Bauder (talk) 00:47, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
Those links seem to work. You can edit them at Special:Interwiki if they don't. Fred Bauder (talk) 00:52, 15 December 2013 (UTC)

In order to rewrite the criticism link at Pāli Canon I had to delete the consolidated template that was there. This means there's no longer a search template on the page, but I don't know where to find it. Peter jackson (talk) 11:08, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

Use Template:SSS for single word titles; Template:SS for multi-word titles. Fred Bauder (talk) 14:04, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

Is it my imagination, or is this site much slower than enwf? If it is, that would be another reason to move active articles there. Of course, if all articles are moved there that would probably cancel the speed advantage. Peter jackson (talk) 10:40, 4 January 2014 (UTC)

Much slower, but clearing up distorted text here should help. You're welcome to move the articles you are actively editing to enwf, but please don't engage in systemic mass moves. A larger wiki will run slower, but lack of this, the Universal Language Selector is what I think is the cause of much of the slowness here. Fred Bauder (talk) 11:00, 4 January 2014 (UTC)

Oh, I'm certainly not going to engage in mass anything: far too much work. Peter jackson (talk) 15:28, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

As others see us

I noticed recently the top right bar on pages now has a language preference icon. Opening the menu, I find "English" & "British English". Who's responsible for this appropriation of our language by colonials? Peter jackson (talk) 09:54, 21 January 2014 (UTC)

A people divided by a common language, someone said that. Fred Bauder (talk) 10:25, 21 January 2014 (UTC)

Does our current hosting still have problems with long pages? Peter jackson (talk) 09:54, 21 January 2014 (UTC)

The software is set so It won't give up, but long delays are possible, particularly when a never before seen page is loaded. Wikipedia articles can be bloated, and dividing them is tedious. If you want a page to load quickly minimize volume, images, and templates. Fred Bauder (talk) 10:28, 21 January 2014 (UTC)

Edit window

I made a curious discovery. Hyphens and en rules look identical in the edit window. I'd always supposed the window gave the complete raw text coding for the displayed page, but it seems there's hidden information in the raw text not visible in the window. I wonder what else might be hidden. Peter jackson (talk) 15:32, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

How does it compare with that is happening on Wikipedia? The Visual Editor may call on pages that are different here from there. Fred Bauder (talk) 18:11, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

Interesting research findings

We operate on the principle of presenting people with the evidence/arguments for both/all sides in controversies. Psychological research shows that, if you get people to read all the evidence, they mostly end up more dogmatically attached to their previous views, citing the evidence that "proves" their case and conveniently forgetting the rest. What does change their attitudes is asking them to give detailed explanations of the facts of teh situation, the policies they support/oppose ... When they realize for themselves that they don't know what they're talking about they become less dogmatic. Peter jackson (talk) 10:11, 11 March 2014 (UTC)

Yes, I've noticed that when I actively edit an article about a controversial subject I often come across information which changes my opinion. However, it is all too easy to dismiss sources which are not agreeable to one's point of view. Fred Bauder (talk) 10:27, 11 March 2014 (UTC)

I am trying to propose an article index which would act like an encyclopedia with (potentially) many articles for each keyphrase.

See the new article Polypedia.

I would like to hear what people think about this. (Or should this discussion be on the Discussion page Talk:Polypedia?) OlavN (talk) 18:52, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

This is a central location for discussion. Wikinfo welcomes multiple articles on nearly all subjects written from alternative points of view; although, implicit in our policy is identification of the point of view the article is being written from. Specifying the point of view you are using is challenging, as, to a holder of that point of view, it is simply the truth. Fred Bauder (talk) 19:40, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
At one time, we were going to make this ML into some such index, but that was abandoned because of lack of capacity. It's still policy for any article to hatlink others on the same topic from different POVs, and for the External links and Suggested reading sections to reference as wide a variety of POvs as possible. Peter jackson (talk) 08:57, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
I'm not sure what "ML" means. Yes all articles on the same, or closely related, subjects should be linked at the top of the page. Suggested readings and external links should reflect the point of view of the article they are in. Fred Bauder (talk) 09:48, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
MultiLingual. Peter jackson (talk) 14:11, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
We are using less than half our capacity; problems with the site freezing up result from useless spidering, i.e. not by google or bing or yahoo, but by obscure spiders which deliver nothing to our visibility. That is dealt with by rebooting when the site becomes too slow. Fred Bauder (talk) 14:19, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
Interesting. A question that occurs to me is why Citizendium has much less of this problem. Peter jackson (talk) 13:03, 20 July 2014 (UTC)

Is [1] any use on this? Peter jackson (talk) 10:58, 11 December 2014 (UTC)
Might have some good ideas, but the increased load from spiders is not so much from bad ones as from volume. They go until they get stuck, then keep trying… Fred Bauder (talk) 15:37, 11 December 2014 (UTC)

enwf:Wikinfo:About looks rather like an import, but has no source acknowledgment. It also looks out of date. Peter jackson (talk) 08:52, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Parenthesized links

In Planet (Stern and Levison's definition) I've put in some links, with the URLs enclosed in brackets in the usual way, and those in turn enclosed by parentheses to make them parenthetical refernces in the text. There are no spaces between the brackets and parentheses in the source text in the edit window, but, for me at least, there is a space between the closing ones, but not the opening ones, in the article as displayed. Odd. Peter jackson (talk) 04:38, 29 August 2015 (CDT)

Yes, ([3]) displays that way for me too. There is a tiny image, a triangle with an arrow pointing up and to the right that should go in there. File:Icon External Link.png Above, in Planet (Stern and Levison's definition), there is an analogous PDF image. Fred Bauder (talk) 07:13, 29 August 2015 (CDT)
See Wikipedia:Help:External link icons I'll import it at Help:External link icons and we can see which icons display here. Fred Bauder (talk) 07:21, 29 August 2015 (CDT)

This bugfix causes it. The missing icon is the yellow padlock. Fred Bauder (talk) 07:57, 29 August 2015 (CDT)
I've now added another such link to the article, which displays properly, but the other 2 still do as before. Curiouser and curiouser. Peter jackson (talk) 04:33, 8 September 2015 (CDT)

There is a software problem which fouls up display of lua script. It will clear up eventually. It is caused by a version of PCRE which is difficult to upgrade at the provider Wikinfo is hosted on. At some point upgrades will move everything along. Fred Bauder (talk) 03:22, 20 December 2015 (CST)

Kategorya as a namespace alias of Category

Can someone add "Kategorya:" as an alias for the Category namespace? It would be easier to import Tagalog Wikipedia articles without modifying them just to change the categories. -- stranger195 (talkcontribsguestbook) 01:56, 28 December 2015 (CST)

$wgNamespaceAliases['kategorya'] = category; doesn't quite work. Any suggestions? Fred Bauder (talk) 04:43, 28 December 2015 (CST)

Of course that won't work. This might:

$wgNamespaceAliases['Usapang_kategorya'] = NS_CATEGORY_TALK;

$wgNamespaceAliases['Kategorio_Debato'] = NS_CATEGORY_TALK;
$wgNamespaceAliases['Arkivo'] = NS_FILE;
$wgNamespaceAliases['Arkivo_Debato'] = NS_FILE_TALK;

It is becoming obvious that our host Rose Hosting, regardless of the supposed capacity of their virtual servers, is not willing to permit the memory required to run mediawiki installations with substantial content to be used. This is not a new problem. It is not caused by normal users but by spiders, which while there are not too many, constantly load pages. I'll be looking for a new host. Suggestions are welcome. Availability of Ubuntu is required. They have repeatedly disabled lua scripts, which seem to employ computing capacity, although not beyond Rose Hosting advertised capacity. New Wiki

I have a plan to setup a new Polish wiki as an alternative to Polish wikipedia. I will be making it multilanguage-ready (en/pl) from the beginning. Currently, I am experimenting with configuration (it's going well). Do you use IRC? I'd love to discuss your vision and wikinfo rules as I am considering various options and also have my own ideas. Let me know. JohnDoe (talk) 20:14, 8 October 2016 (CDT)

I don't usually use IRC but I could you can use the email function here to email me. The biggest problem I have run into is Scribunto, which if activated, can call on more computing capacity than a virtual server provider is willing to put up with. Fred Bauder (talk) 20:32, 8 October 2016 (CDT)
I am going to configure Scribunto today after I get some sleep. I guess you are not using HHVM, APCu, Memcached nor Squid/Varnish? JohnDoe (talk) 23:55, 8 October 2016 (CDT)
The problem is spidering by numerous search providers which will result in scribunto being run over and over and over, thousands of times a day. All for nothing, as the people doing the spidering do nothing for you in terms of your needs. It isn't just Google or Bing that spiders. I doubt I use any of the suggestions you make, but I'm not going to look them up right now. Fred Bauder (talk) 10:27, 9 October 2016 (CDT)
What goes on on the Polish Wikipedia that is a problem for you or others. Fred Bauder (talk) 20:32, 8 October 2016 (CDT)
Lack of transparency (for example blocks are consulted completely off-site between admins, discussion pages are always blocked - all without any warning and for arbitrary time), authoritarian culture - arbitrary decisions, rules mostly ignored and censorship (including ownership of content, removal or 'watering down' of any unwelcome content even if source is properly cited). More recently, they have degraded "BOLD" to a non-rule calling it an 'essay at most'. It's just a waste of time for me to discuss articles there. For example, "Occult" article says that it is practical science with active research. It mentions that it is used 'pejoratively' but doesn't tell anything about mainstream scientific view. There is no 3RR so everything is potentially edit warring. It was not fixed after I was blocked for putting NPOV there. I am not a very active user, but I have manged to fix some issues there. I need more freedom and I would like to make a place for sourced content that is censored on polish wikipedia.
Because of this, I am also thinking about the rules that I should put in place and how to organize new wiki. In particular, how to avoid voting, npov issues and promote efficiency without being disrespectful for new users.
I have almost finished reading the article about "Structurelessness" - very interesting. Thx for a link. It fits well into my initial ideas about how to enforce more egalitarianism in hierarchical democratic structure without voting :) But those ideas are still work in progress. JohnDoe (talk) 23:55, 8 October 2016 (CDT)
PS. there are no bans on polish wiki JohnDoe (talk) 00:29, 9 October 2016 (CDT)
The English Wikipedia does much better than that. Each language Wikipedia reflects national culture. Polish culture has a profound split with authoritarianism on one side and rigorous liberalism on the other (I know I'm out of bounds here, but whatever). An article on the occult is a good example of a subject which cries out for multiple points of view. Humbug on one hand, good entertainment on the other, and such things as exorcism by the church. Many Wikipedia editors have some sort of agenda and their editing can be focused not just on promoting their agenda but suppressing other points of view. They need to be called out and confronted, hard work and lots of tension are involved when you do that. Fred Bauder (talk) 10:27, 9 October 2016 (CDT)
People often complain to Jimbo Wales on his en-WP talk page about goings on in foreign WPs. I don't know whether it ever does any good, though. Peter jackson (talk) 04:29, 15 October 2016 (CDT) [4]

Infogalactic Fred Bauder (talk) 14:13, 10 October 2016 (CDT)

Possibly interesting, but totally inadequately explained. Peter jackson (talk) 04:40, 15 October 2016 (CDT)

Fred Bauder, I would like to recommend for your consideration. In case of any doubts, admins are available at #miraheze channel on freenode IRC. JohnDoe (talk) 06:46, 11 October 2016 (CDT)

It seems they do backups but without user passwords (hashes) so there is a vendor lock-in. JohnDoe (talk) 18:12, 12 October 2016 (CDT)

Corrupted characters

I've just been going through my Doctor Who by year articles purging these, but came across a problem. In the last one I just did, most of the changes came out as intended, but the restoration of ae ligature didn't work. In the edit window it shows up as what it should be, but in the actual article the corrupted character remains. I don't understand all the technical stuff, but it looks to me like some of the EditTools don't work as displayed. Peter jackson (talk) 12:35, 27 October 2016 (CDT)

Displays correctly now. Must have needed reloading. Fred Bauder (talk) 13:55, 27 October 2016 (CDT)
Not on the computer system I'm using right now. Peter jackson (talk) 03:42, 28 October 2016 (CDT)
Exactly where? I might have been on the wrong page. Fred Bauder (talk) 03:52, 28 October 2016 (CDT)
1974 in Doctor Who#Books. Peter jackson (talk) 04:24, 28 October 2016 (CDT)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────Displays normally. Fred Bauder (talk) 04:29, 28 October 2016 (CDT)

But not on these computers. Curious. Peter jackson (talk) 04:16, 29 October 2016 (CDT)
Or these ones. Peter jackson (talk) 10:07, 31 October 2016 (CDT)
Seems sorted now. Peter jackson (talk) 09:47, 7 November 2016 (CST)
But I did nothing. The wrong stuff was cached. Fred Bauder (talk) 10:02, 7 November 2016 (CST)

Old address

Seems to have been acquired by Communpedia: [5]. We seem to have quite a few unupdated links that now go there. Peter jackson (talk) 05:09, 7 January 2017 (CST)

Also seems to apply to cross-wiki codes like enwf. Peter jackson (talk) 05:17, 7 January 2017 (CST)

Has to do with subdirectories in server. My bad. Fred Bauder (talk) 08:55, 7 January 2017 (CST)
But can you fix it, or do we need to change loads of links? Peter jackson (talk) 07:55, 8 January 2017 (CST)

I'll start with enwf Fred Bauder (talk) 11:45, 8 January 2017 (CST)

Interwiki links should now go where they are supposed to. The wikinfo interwiki link remains wrong on other wikis. Fred Bauder (talk) 13:16, 8 January 2017 (CST)
But maybe wrong in a better way: I get 404 not found instead of Communpedia (a known unknown instead of an unknown unknown). Peter jackson (talk) 08:18, 9 January 2017 (CST)
Please edit Special:Interwiki until it is fixed. (edit tap is to the right) Fred Bauder (talk) 08:53, 9 January 2017 (CST)

now working normally again (at least on this computer!). Just checked my Preferences, according to which my email address was confirmed back in 2008. Peter jackson (talk) 10:20, 21 January 2017 (CST)

It was probably a problem with disc space. Fred Bauder (talk) 10:22, 21 January 2017 (CST)
Not working yesterday, but OK today. Peter jackson (talk) 07:59, 26 February 2017 (CST)
