Working conditions

Working conditions together with wages and hours partially define the situation of workers who are engaged in production.

Audits

Distributors and retailers sometimes conduct audits of conditions in the factories of suppliers in areas of concern such as garment factories in Bangladesh. However, as they may occur only at intervals of 6 months or more and are often announced in advance, they may be ineffective. According to informed observers inspections need to be comprehensive and followed up by effective action. It is not enough to punish offending manufacturers by not dealing with them while they continue to engage in manufacturing. Everyone, government, factory owners, and their powerful and wealthy customers must work together and contribute to a solution.[1]
